January 11, 2004 What ever happened to the centerfold? The nudes produced in any age seem to have a style all their own. For example, the nudes of Pеtеr Pаυl Rubens, a Baroque painter in the 16-17th century, each featured several extremely corpulant women in lyrical, mythological or boudoir type settings frolicking with satyrs or with each other. His nudes influenced artists for centuries afterwards. Much later, the style of nudes in our fathers' era was typified by Playboy magazine, whose pictorials featured a lovingly crafted completely nude centerfold with a few semi-nude photos gathered around it like attentive hand-maidens, all of significantly lesser beauty, all lazily sprawled over the temple steps, all drawing our attention in mounting excitement to the beautiful woman as work of art raised up in their midst. For a moment in the timeline of history, the focus was on the ideal woman, and the perfect photograph of her.
The style of today in nude photography is best represented by photographers like Alеxаndеr Fеdоrоv. It is a style in which the concept of one perfect photo has been abandonned for galleries of scores of photos all shot in the same location at the same time. In these galleries every photo is of equal significance, or insignificance - the beauty is to be found in the sum of the parts, not in any one photo.
Oddly enough, one of the latest developments in the modern style is the re-introduction from Baroque times of several models in each image. We at Body in Mind are somewhat saddened to see our fathers' style go, and in our hearts we are always looking for the 'centerfold' shot' whenever we look at a modern nude gallery. This is what makes working with Alеxаndеr Fеdоrоv such a pleasure. We are lucky enough to see every single photograph he takes (and he takes a lot) and then choose the very best to feature here on Body in Mind. In fact, we've looked through hundreds of Fedorovs's latest photos to create today's gallery.
So if you're tired of looking through huge galleries of nearly identical photos only to find one or two that you like, then you'll love this week's gallery. It's nothing but the very best of Alеxаndеr Fеdоrоv. But if you'd prefer to see every single one of Fedorov's photos, hey, you can always apply for my job. ;-)
