January 17, 2001 - Hаs Bаrіyа Magazu's death been postponed, or is she already dead?

Death and Forgetfulness

She is already dead.

Inspite of her sentence being postponed indefinitely and her punishment being reduced from 180 to 100 lashes with a cane, 17-year old Bаrіyа Mаgаzυ has already suffered unimaginable pscychological degradation, incomparable spiritual hypocrasy, inhuman moral inversions and such intellectual starvation that no human being could ever survive. Hеr Nіgеrіаn countrymen have already done more damage and have left her more disabled and pitiful, her life more irreparably ruined, her soul more completely vanquished than any physical torture or execution they could inflict ever could.

All women and young girls where Bariya lives must cover their bodies from head to toe in strict accordance with Islamic dictates. Yet that does not seem to deter sexual violence and predation in her country. To the contrary. It seems to encourage it.

Coerced by her own father into having sex with 3 of his friends, Bariya was impregnated and forced to carry the child to term. But that is not where the horror ends.

According to Nіgеrіаn Shаrіа law, a strict Islamic legal code, she was found guilty of engaging in pre-marital sex and was sentenced to a public caning.

Her punishment was increased from 100 lashes to 180 (more than enough to kill) when she named her r4pіsts. Under sharia law, to indict an alleged lover at least 4 people would have to testify that they witnessed the act.

The state has no plans to investigate who her r4pіsts were.

The latest horror to come to light is that Bariya still lives in her father's small house which has an open doorway through which crowds of neighbours and passers-by gawk at her.

Make no mistake. Her delayed sentence is just that. It's meant only to delay her execution until we forget, to placate the human rights groups who have garnered unprecedented media attention for Magazu's case.

If you are relieved for her, consider the next poor girl who will not get quite so much publicity, or the next after that.

Or what about Mаryаm Arооbі, the Iranian woman to die by stoning this month for having an extra-marital affair. Perhaps you haven't heard about her?

According to Amnеsty Intеrnаtіоnаl, in the last several years flogging has taken place in 14 countries - not all of them Muslim - and amputations in seven.

The problem, however, is not the punishment. The problem is the so-called crimes. Adultery, getting pregnant out of wedlock, being out in public alone, showing an ankle - these are not crimes. They have been made crimes so they may be punished. Some people want to see young women brutally butchered, so they attach the most brutal punishments to the most innocent of 'crimes'.

I don't know what's more terrifying, that Bariya's sentence will most certainly be carried out the second we forget, or that we will most certainly forget.
