May 9, 2004 SelfishnessPerhaps the main reason images of beautiful women are attacked is because in our society, self-sacrifice is held up as the greatest virtue, and there is nothing self-sacrificing about putting yourself on display. Posing for a photo is a selfish act, and believing that you are beautiful enought to pose of for a glamor photo is supremely 'self'ish. Especially if you do it nude. Then there is nothing in the photo except you, no clothes, nothing to hide behind. There is nothing in the photo but your self. And if your nude photo is admired, then your selfishness is being admired and rewarded too. This infuriates those who preach or practice self-sacrifice. Watch for it. See if you notice anyone frowning at or attacking nude photos of beautiful women who isn't someone who believes in the virtue of self-sacrifice. Maybe it's time to question our assumption that selfishness is always bad. It would seem to me that in some cases, it is very good indeed. And good in a way that inspires, and celebrates the self in the form of a lovely woman - in a way that hurts no one, and benefits all. Now, occasionally, altruists and the preachers of self-sacrifice will claim that a girl who poses nude is sacrificing herself, sacrificing her chastity, privacy, dignity of her 'self' and the ownership of her body and sexuality, sacrificing it for the mere pleasure of men. If you ever hear one of these altruists say this, you've got all the proof you should need of their evil. Normally altruists praise self-sacrifice for the sake of others. How is posing nude any different? Notice how they hate the beauty of the nude female so much that they are willing to reverse their position on the goodness of altruism when it comes to women posing nude. Suddenly self-sacifice, their cherished ideal, an ideal worth dying for, becomes a bad thing. Theirs is a seething, mindless hatred that goes beyond all reason and all morality. Of course, in reality posing nude is rarely done as a sacrifice, but it's quite revealing how easily altruists can be made to see the vile nature of self-sacrifice when presented to them this way. Too bad, they can't see that self-sacrifice is always vile. It's easy to see the incredibly vile nature of beauty-hating altruists. It should be equally easy to see the laudable nature of female beauty and the women who share it with us all for the profoundly selfish pleasure of being beautiful, which is the pleasure of being admired for their purpose, self-esteem, intelligence, benevolence, innocence, and happiness. Only selfishness, the good kind, can motivate a woman to develop these qualities of character, which means that in the end, female beauty, comes down to an "inner beauty" of sorts, a morality in fact, a morality called selfishness. © 2004 by Body in Mind |
