Last night something very rare occurred, something we hardly ever see: a beautiful woman had her dream come true. Last night, at the 70th Annυаl Acаdеmy Awards, Kіm Bаsіngеr won the academy award for Bеst Actrеss in a Sυppоrtіng Rоlе for her work in L.A. Confidential. Most people seem to think that beautiful women get everything they want, and that they get it just because they're beautiful. The truth is actually the opposite. In fact, beautiful women rarely get what they want. Sure they get attention, lots of it, but when it comes to having their dreams come true, people love to deny them, just because they're beautiful. For example, I recently attended a dinner at one of those Mеdіеvаl Tіmеs jousting matches where guys dress up in suits of armour and fight each other on Andalusian stallions just like men did in the Mіddlе Agеs. At the end of the joust the victorious knight gets to pick a beautiful lady out of the audience to be his Queen of the Joust or whatever. He can choose any beautiful woman he wants. The bombastic announcer makes this quite clear. Yet consistently, for some reason beyond my comprehension, the champion always picks some old, hideous hag, or else a little girl not more than 6! Similarly, a local television station recently allowed its viewing audience to pick from among two young women for the position of summer entertainment reporter. The first was a pretty, but slightly awkward girl who was good but seemed to mumble a bit. The second was a happy, beautiful blond with an amazing smile and an effortless on-camera manner. The audience chose the first girl. I'm sure you will notice your own examples of this kind of thing. They're everywhere. Lucky for Kіm Bаsіngеr the general public does not pick the winners of the Acаdеmy Awаrd. She deserved to win and did. Her screen presence is nothing more than miraculous in every film she's ever done. Yet she's never won a thing. In fact, if you think about it, when was the last time you saw a beautiful woman win anything but a beauty contest? It was truly touched by Kim's dream coming true. Her speech was the best ever given. It was short, funny, touching, and totally sincere. I was thrilled to see a beautiful woman win something other than a beauty contest. Not because I dislike beauty contests but because beautiful women so rarely get what they deserve. |
