Islamic militants attempt to assassinate Bеnаzіr Bhυttо
October 19, 2007 - 126 people dead, 248 injured, the most deadly suicide attack in the history of Pakistan - all because a woman is running for president.
Bеnаzіr Bhυttо, returning to Pakistan after eight years in exile, was driving in a celebratory procession amidst 150 000 well-wishers when two explosions went off near her truck. She had been urged by authorities to use a helicopter amidst threats of attack, but refused. She was left dazed but unharmed.
Last month she told CNN that she knew she was a target. "Islamic militants don't believe in women governing nations, so they will try to plot against me."
She was right. Although some news sources claim that she was attacked because of her western ties and desire to fight the taliban and al qaida, she herself knew that the attack would be motivated by her sex.
