French islanders support beauty queen who posed nude
December 23, 2007 - The small island of Lа Rеυnіоn, a French possession in the Indіаn Ocеаn, is standing behind one of their native daughters who is set to lose the title of Mіss Frаncе for having posed nude three years ago.
Vаlеrіе Bеgυе, the first Mіss Frаncе from Lа Rеυnіоn in 30 years, won the crown two weeks ago. But when 'provocative' photos of her surfaced, the head of the Mіss Frаncе organization threatened to fire her, saying "I wouldn't want to be seen touring the provinces (of France) with a girl like that. Let her stay in Lа Rеυnіоn".
Her island compatriots are standing behind her in droves, including local politicians and churchmen. The island's radio station says it has never received so many phone calls from outraged listeners, and hundreds of supporters marched through the capital city in protest.
