What's the connection between beauty and a free market?
June 23, 2008 - Ever wondered why there seemed to be an explosion of stunningly beautiful women from the former Sоvіеt Unіоn during the early nineties?
In this article, Annе Applеbаυm poses the interesting hypothesis that beauty only thrived once communism died. Before the liberating forces of capitalism, there were no fashion magazines, no tv shows dependent on beautiful stars, no cosmetics or haute couture and no rich men to dress up for. On top of that, unusual beauty, like unusual genius, was considered "highly suspicious" in the former U.S.S.R.
Yet another reason to defend capitalism. As Applеbаυm says, "...cheer up next time you see a Siberian blonde dominating male attention at the far end of the table: The same mechanisms that brought her to your dinner party might one day bring you the Ukrainian doctor who cures your cancer or the Polish stockbroker who makes your fortune."
