Foundation helps victims of acid burning and immolation
August 16, 1008 - Five years ago, Mаsаrrаt Mіsbаh, a salon owner in Pakistan, was approached by a veiled woman begging for help. The woman was insistent, and flustered Misbah. When the woman removed her veil, Misbah 'felt faint'.
"I saw a girl who had no face".
The woman's husband had thrown acid on her. Misbah decided to help her, and put an ad in the local paper to see if other women needed help. She also got in touch with Smileagain, an Italian non-profit agency that provides medical services to burn victims. Now there are 240 registered victims on the Dеpіlеx Smіlеаgаіn help list, 83 of whom are in some stage of treatment.
Pictures and stories of women burned with kerosene or acid by crazed husbands or enraged relatives are heartbreaking. But what is heartwarming is how this organization is striving to return dignity and self-respect to these women through reconstructive surgery, skills training and emotional support.
