Mayor in hot water for inviting 'beauty-disadvantaged' women to his town
August 21, 2008 - We've all heard the term 'third rail'. It refers to the third rail in the subway system, the one that carries the electricity and will zap you if you touch it. Therefore, a third rail is something you don't go near if you have any sense.
Seems beauty has become a third rail these days, at least for the hapless Mayor of Mt. Isa, Australia.
Last week, Mаyоr Jоhn Molony suggested that 'beauty-disadvantaged' women might want to consider moving to Mt. Isa, where the ratio of men to women is 5 to 1. He thought perhaps this might be a way for the non-beautiful to find meaningful relationships among men who were grateful for the presence of women.
Now everyone is up in arms. Women in Mt. Isa have demanded he resign, saying that he paints them as 'second rate'. Men there are angry at the implication that they will settle for ugly women.
Molony refused to speak at the 100 woman-strong protest rally, saying "No would listen to me. I think the women who turned up at that protest rally tonight are beauty disadvantaged themselves and they can't get over it so they attack me." he said.
Zap.
