Lawyer loses license for accepting nude dancing as payment
September 21, 2008 - In this shaky economy, it's little wonder that people are starting to get creative with financial matters and bringing back the barter system. But in Illinois, at least, you'd better not try to barter legal services for nude dancing, as one lawyer recently found out.
Scоtt Rоbеrt Erwin of DeKalb met a dancer at a local nude bar, and discovered that he had actually spoken on the phone with her regarding legal matters. Since the dancer was having trouble affording the legal fees, she and Erwin "mutually agreed that she perform nude dances for him for him in his office as a way to cut down on the fees".
It all fell apart when the dancer alleged Erwin touched her. Even though a jury failed to indict him, the Illіnоіs Attоrnеy Registration and Dіscіplіnаry Cоmmіssіоn suspended Erwin from practicing law for 15 months.
If a barter arrangement between this lawyer and, say, a roofer, had resulted in a possible criminal charge, we're certain he wouldn't have lost his license.
