Expelled for wearing a mini-skirt
November 15, 2009 - Whеn Gеіsy Arruda dressed for her university class one day, she couldn't have imagined that the mini-dress she chose would make her the subject of a world-wide news story.
Arruda, 20, was expelled from her university in Sао Pаоlо, Brazil for wearing a 'inadequate clothing" to class. She was aslo accused of "disrespecting ethical principles, academic dignity and morality", and was heckled by hundreds of her peers.
Flooded with protests from around the world, the university recently reversed its decision and allowed her back to class, but they refused to say why.
As in most cases of discrimination or abuse directed at women for being too attractive, or too feminine, or for just being women, the abusers often recant when their actions in caught in the public spotlight. And it always makes us wonder how this would have played out if Arruda's story hadn't become an internet sensation - or how many other women suffer similar injustices that we never hear about.
